Google has implemented many semantic markers through Schema.org and microdata. This allows webmasters to display certain information in the SERPs via rich snippets . Not everything is displayed continuously, Google keeps the final decision, but thanks to these markers placed in the HTML code of web pages, it "offers" us the possibility of gaining visibility. Among these markers, there is "events" intended to display the next upcoming events , but it seems that not very smart webmasters have decided to use it to discreetly place promotions. Bottom line, we still risk seeing new penalties arrive thanks to the stupidity of some...
Google has clarified in an official press release in several off page seo service languages ( French and English in particular) what the "events" tag should actually be used for and why it is not acceptable to let some unfortunate webmasters abuse rich snippets to display other information (namely promotions, etc.). Google has added some details to the page that describes the "events" tag in order to put in place safeguards, there is even a specific documentation page on spammy rich snippets if necessary.
Manual actions can be applied for sites that cheat on this subject, even if in most cases, Google seems inclined to hide only rich snippets (wow, what a dissuasive sanction! ^^). Among the new instructions, Google has added Don't mark coupons or vouchers as events, such as: "5% off your first order" . In other words, webmasters must not use the events tag to display a promotion or a promo code. If this wasn't clear to you yet, it should be now. :-)
Spammy events marker banned for Google rich snippets
The firm points out that the "events" marker from Schema.org is used to specify an event that will take place at a specific time , while promotions or promo codes do not have this exact purpose. This misleads Internet users and especially the search engine's guidelines. If Google detects this type of spam, Google Search Console should display the result of a manual action that will only be lifted after the deception has been cleaned up . In order to be even more complete, the press release recalled that for any type of data, only elements corresponding to the type of marker are tolerated, it's as simple as that and there is therefore no point in trying to circumvent the rules...
